The Aboriginal (now Indigenous) Youth Sport Legacy Fund was created to assist amateur athletes of Indigenous ancestry, including athletes with a disability or disabilities, in their pursuit of excellence in sport. The grant seeks to relieve some of the financial costs associated with high performance sport, including registration, travel, equipment, and coaching expenses. Grants are awarded to athletes competing in any sport, with priority given to athletes participating on provincial teams, national teams, and/or in any regional, provincial, or national tournaments and competitions featuring Indigenous participants (i.e. North American Indigenous Games, All Native Basketball Tournament).

Applicants are able to apply for a grant between $500 and $2,000 for expenses incurred between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021 depending on their level of eligibility. Please refer to the following link for grant guidelines and the levels of eligibility.

2021 Field Provincials Update from BCLA President

Dear BCLA Members:

The BCLA Field Lacrosse Provincials are the pinnacle of competitions for many young lacrosse athletes. In the COVID-19 conditions and restrictions we are currently experiencing in sport, it is a challenge to plan for large events that entails travel and large gatherings of people.

After consultation with the BCLA Field Directorate, the BCLA Board of Directors regrets to inform you that the 2021 BCLA Field Lacrosse Provincial Championships scheduled for February 2021 are cancelled. This includes cancellations for the age groups: U13, U15, U18 Youth Field Lacrosse and U12, U15 and U19 Women’s Field Lacrosse.

The health and safety for all participants in the BC Lacrosse community is paramount and is central to our decisions around COVID-19 and Return to Lacrosse activities. All involved in our sport must take direction from the appropriate health authorities, including the Public Health Agency of Canada, the BC Ministry of Health and your local health authority including guidelines identified by your city or municipality.

We thank the host communities for stepping up to host a Field Provincial tournament and we commend all volunteers who have spent countless hours planning these events. Your hard work does not go unnoticed and we thank you for your efforts.

To all administrators and volunteers, thank you for your patience and remaining strong through this trying time.

If you have any additional questions, please e-mail me at gerry@bclacrosse.com

Yours in Lacrosse,
Gerry Van Beek
BCLA President

Return to Play Update

Hello BFLC Families,

Below this announcement are links to two small PDF documents. They contain important information about getting our Field Lacrosse season started safely.

Additionally we are building up our new website with as much information as possible, including our 2020-2021 Season Safety Plan and Return to Play Protocols in full. You can access them here: https://burnabyfieldlacrosse.ca/documents/

I know it’s a busy week with the kids also getting their first look at schools. We look forward to seeing everyone at the field for some fun over the next week.

Youth U11 & U13 Update

The U11 and U13 teams are almost full at the maximum 20 players per team for this season. Once the team is full, you must still register with Burnaby if you wish to play, but you will be released to another club.
If you are in this situation, you will be notified by the registrar and you will be required to complete the “Player Request Release Form” found here.  While some consideration may be given to place players in nearby clubs, ultimately, players will be released to the club that has capacity to take them. However, the player can decline.  If the player accepts the placement with the new club, he will then register directly with that club and be refunded by Burnaby. Any further questions, please reach out to Jackie White at registrar@burnabyfieldlacrosse.ca.

Female U15 & U19 Update

Unfortunately, Burnaby is unable to field female U15 and U19 teams for the 2020/21 season due to low registration.  Players wishing to play at these levels will be required to complete the “Player Request Release Form” found here.  While some consideration may be given to place players in nearby clubs, ultimately, players will be released to the club that has capacity to take them. However, the player can decline.  If the player accepts the placement with the new club, she will then register directly with that club and be refunded by Burnaby. Any further questions, please reach out to Jackie White at registrar@burnabyfieldlacrosse.ca.

Burnaby Devils – Games announced

On August 24th, ViaSport announced that the Return to Sports plan for British Columbia has moved to Phase 3. Full Phase 3 details are available on the ViaSport website. At this time, BCLA is still in their Phase 1 Return to play and we expect the Phase 2 guidelines by mid-September.

While this is positive news, it is not a return to normal League play that we are familiar with. The BCLA will be formalizing the “game” format over the coming weeks and this will include games with an alternate rule set and limited teams inside a small cohort at each age and skill level. We also anticipate that this will include updated safety protocols for our games and practises.

At this time, the BCLA and PCFLL are intending to start game play within 4-team cohorts, as per ViaSport, on October 10 and 11 continuing until Family Day weekend in February 2021.

Until then, training will take place twice a week for most teams as we take advantage of September weather and open field on the weekends.

Our coaching staff is also starting to take shape. At this time we have named the following head coaches:

U7 Youth: Vacant

U9 Youth: Vacant

U11 Youth: Vacant (Asst: Sean Gastor)

U13 Youth: Nic Fernandes

U15 Youth: Tyler Kirkby

U18 Youth: Derek Rigazzi

U8 Women’s: Nick Liu

U12: Women’s: Andrew Guindon

U15: Women’s; Vacant

U19: Women’s: Vacant

Coaching applications are on-line via TeamSnap and can be accessed here: https://go.teamsnap.com/forms/233788

We are still recruiting for Assistant Coaches at most age levels.

As registrations are processed, Coaches will reach out to players and parents via the Club’s TeamSnap.

Registration remains open and fees will increase on September 8th and we appreciate early registrations in order to firm up our team sizes. Please note that due to Social Gathering restrictions of no more than 50 people, roster sizes for 2020 may be limited to under 20 participants per team (the club is waiting for confirmation from the BCLA).

Registration for 2020 Season Now Open

Registration is now open for the 2020 Field Lacrosse season. The Club thanks all our families for their patience while we worked with our League and the BCLA with regards to what the upcoming season will look like.

At this time, games and contact are not permitted under the guidelines. On September 8, training sessions will commence with proper distancing and will focus on shooting, passing, and fitness. We do not know when we will be permitted to have games and we do not know what those games will look like – but it is anticipated that game play will look different when they are permitted. It is the League and the BCLA’s intention to introduce game play as soon as it is permitted by local or provincial health authorities. If you would like to learn more about the current sport guidelines you can find them here:

https://www.viasport.ca/sites/default/files/ReturntoSportGuidelines.pdf http://www.bclacrosse.com/return-to-lacrosse.php

Due to Covid complications, the Club is not offering a true Early Bird rate this season. Instead, an adjusted fee is in place for 2020 and if circumstances prevent any games from being played, the Club will review the costs incurred for the season in an effort to provide a refund or credit towards next season. Additionally, the club is only accepting Interac eTransfers for this season’s registration (we anticipate credit card processing will return next year).

The Club is still in need of coaches, both qualified and new to the discipline. If you would like to volunteer, our online Coaching Application is located here:  https://go.teamsnap.com/forms/233788

If you know of any families that might be interested in joining our club, please forward this to them.

We have a new website URL this year:  www.burnabyfieldlacrosse.ca and we will provide information as it becomes available as it pertains to this season.

Please email any questions you have regarding the season to:  President@BurnabyFieldLacrosse.ca. Registration-specific questions can be directed to:  Registrar@BurnabyFieldLacrosse.ca.

I look forward to seeing everyone upon our return to the field in September.

Welcome to the 2019/2020 Field Lacrosse Season!

Hi Devils Families,

On behalf of the 2019/20 Club Executive, welcome to the new field lacrosse season.

Games for the League will begin the weekend of September 14 & 15. Your team will have some practice dates before then, starting this week.

If you have not heard from your coach yet, your child is invited to an open field session at Burnaby Lake West Field #3, September 3rd, from 5-8pm. This is to shake the rust off and throw the ball around. Further practices will be updated on TeamSnap.

We are fortunate to have a large club this season – which does present some scheduling challenges, so we thank-you in advance for your patience while things start going.

We wish everyone a great Field season and look forward to seeing everyone on the field over the next couple of weeks.

Regards,

Brad Romano
